Fresno County can be found in the state of California in Central Valley. Just last year in 2008, it became the tenth most populated county in the state. Its population had reached 931,098. It also holds the award for 6th largest county in size which an area that is almost 6,100 square miles. Its county seat is Fresno and again that came with another award. Fresno is California's 5th largest city.
Fresno County started its journey in an area known as a steppe. That means that is was a region where the grassland plain had no trees around and no near by lakes or rivers. The region also received little rainfall. This area was discovered by Spaniards and in 1846; it became the US's property as a result of the Mexican War. 10 years later Fresno County was formed from pieces of Tulare, Mariposa, and Merced Counties.
The name for the county came from the Spanish word "Fresno" that means "ash tree". Fresno Creek was the inspiration for the county and the ash trees are plentiful in the county area so the name was quite fitting. Today the beauty of the trees is still there and the agriculture made Fresno County the number county for the field in the entire nation.
Fresno County has major crops and livestock as a part of its agriculture industry. The livestock includes turkeys and cattle. As for crops, Fresno is quite abundant. They have grapes, cotton, almonds, tomatoes, milk, plums, oranges, peaches, and nectarines. It is easy to see why agriculture is very popular in this county.
They are numerous companies that are based in Fresno County. They include Sun Maid Raisins, David Sunflower Seeds, and the National Raisin Company. Central Valley Community Bank and Pacific Ethanol are also based here. There is a list of major employers in Fresno too. Kraft, Pepsi Bottling Group, Sun Maid Raisins and Chevron are always looking to beef up their companies.

Kings Canyon National Park and Shaver Lake are perfect for outdoor entertainment. Shopping malls in Fresno are there to drain your wallet and fill your closet, but in a good way. Sierra Vista and the Fulton Mall are just two of many choices around the county.
