About the college
When it was first opened in 1961, there were 250 students. They moved to Rohnert Park its permanent location on 215 acres in 1966 once Darwin and Stevenson Halls were built. There began to be more and more students enrolling so they had to expand by adding more buildings including Ives Hall for performing arts, a dining commons, library, physical education building, and three lakes, which are used for visual features on campus. From 1969 until 2009, they have added over 20 additional buildings from pools to kitchen and concert halls. They are also adding a 700-bed residence hall that will open fall of 2009. About the campus Sonoma has on campus housing and a restaurant for the students. The residence hall, which will open fall of 2009, will have 700 beds. The Hospitality Hall has a restaurant and a dining conference area. There is a library and bookstore on campus for the students to use for their studies. They built a aquatic area with pools and a theatre, concert hall, dining area, living rooms, are just a few of the additions they have made for the students. About the courses Sonoma State University offers well over 65 undergraduate and graduate degrees in many different areas of studies. Most of the students are taking liberal arts, conservation and resource management and therapy and counseling. They offer financial aid to those who qualify and have many government programs to assist. They offer full and part time classes for those who have to work to go to school. There faculty is on a tenure system so they have a lot of teachers that have been there for many years. This helps students being taught by a teacher who is very experienced.
