About the College
Ray Kappe founded SCIA in 1972 in Los Angeles, California and at that time, it was named New School. This is a private college that specializes in architecture. Students get their undergraduate degrees in architecture and design. They also offer initiatives and study abroad programs to their students. When it was first built, it was in a freight depot that was a mile long. With over 500 students and 80 instructors, which of most are practicing architects, they are working together to re-think and explore and to test the limits of architecture. They invite the community into the classroom as well as bring the classroom out into the community to share ideas and get new ideas.
About the campus
Southern California Institute has many events for the students. Fridays at Five is a barbecue open to the whole campus and they have a Halloween party. The students hold an art exhibit, they maintain the lecture series, which is a yearly publication, and they help purchase tools for the different departments through fundraisers. The student union holds many different meetings with the students and staff to get ideas and give help when needed to make the campus life better. They do not have on campus housing but this is their way of interacting with the community by choosing to live within walking distance of the campus. There is a list of housing in the school office. Meals are not yet provided but there are several different restaurants and cafes that offer student discounts.
