San Bernardino County is one of many counties that are located in the state of California. It was formed in 1853 from parts of LA County. The county has had quite of residents in the years since its founding and some have been celebrities in various fields. Some are current residents and some are former.
The founder of Taco Bell, Glen Bell, calls San Bernardino home. Famous wild west gun slinger Wyatt Earp, a “fighting Earp” of Dodge City, lived in San Timoteo Canyon, Colton and Vidal. The city of Earp, also in California, was named after him. Another western fellow by the name of Roy Rodgers lived in Apple Valley as did actor Cuba Gooding Jr. Actor Gene Hackman was born in San Bernardino. Former guitar prodigy Randy Rhoades, played with Ozzy Osbourne, was buried at Mountain View Cemetery.
The city of Trona is west of Death Valley. The national park has just a small portion of land that is actually part of San Bernardino County. San Bernardino Valley has an extensive list of cities. They include Ontario, Chino, Fontana, Grand Terrace, Rancho Cucamonga, Highland and Yucaipa.
San Bernardino County is larger than the 9 smallest states in the US and the largest county in the continental United States. Its location puts in it in the southeast corner of California with desert and mountain terrain. These parts stretch from the Riverside-San Bernardino Area through the border from the state of Nevada and the Colorado River.
San Bernardino’s county seat is the city of the same name. The Inland Empire region, which is large metropolitan area that is made up of two large counties: San Bernardino and Riverside. San Bernardino County is the only county that is bordered by Arizona and Nevada. It also is one of only two counties to border more than a single US state.
The history of San Bernardino County is one that is short, but to the point. The city of San Bernardino was named in 1810 by a man named Father Francisco Dumetz. In 1853 the county of San Bernardino was formed from parts of LA County. 40 years later and San Bernardino shared some of its land with Riverside County.
There are several colleges and universities located in San Bernardino County. They include Barstow Community College, California State University-San Bernardino, Palo Verde Community College(Needles Campus) and the University of Redlands. San Bernardino County has educational institutions for every step of your academic career.
There are numerous things to do in San Bernardino County. Families can enjoy weekend camping trips into the mountains and college students can study outdoors in the nice weather. Places to visit include The Mojave National Preserve, Joshua Tree National Park, the San Bernardino National Forest and Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex. Zzyzx is a place in the desert that once was a spa retreat, but now is the Desert Studies Center. Calico Ghost Town is now a park, but started its days as a mining town.
San Bernardino is a one stop destination where you can gaze at the mountains and spot a celebrity sighting or two.
