About the College
Soka University opened its doors in 1994 and the liberal arts opened in 2001 to top students of every nationality and beliefs. Soka was founded on the Buddhist principles of peace, human rights, and the sanctity of life. This is a four-year private, not for profit liberal arts and undergraduate college located in Aliso Viejo, California. Liberal Arts, education, and Teaching are the most popular courses taken. The highest level at Soka University is The Masters Degree. Students that come to Soka come from over 30 countries around the world.
About the campus
There is on campus housing to over 500 students on 113 acres and only Freshman are required to live on campus while other years can live off campus if they wish but almost all of them live on campus. There are meals available to students up to 19 meals a week. The residential community is where many long-term friendships have grown and lasted throughout their lives. They are encouraged to express their feelings and thoughts in their community. They must respect each other, have safety, cleanliness, be quiet, enjoy, and respect each other’s privacy.
About the courses
The main majors students take are in Liberal Arts and Education and Teaching. They offer one major and that is a BA in Liberal Arts with focus in the fields of Environmental Studies, Humanities, International Studies, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. As with everything else, the school is growing as well. They have two construction projects in the works. They are opening a Performing Arts center and an academic building and these should be finished in the fall of 2010. Financial aid is available and free tuition is available to families who earn under $60,000. They will still have to pay room and board.
